Tsubaki and Ayame Design Over glaze enameling Uwaetsuke is a traditional Japanese pottery technique with a decorative
bright-colored appearance. It started around the seventeenth century.
Paints made with copper, cobalt, or iron, are applied on glaze fired
pots and re-fired at a low temperature. This highly challenging technique
requires care and expertise. For example the controlling of three firings
(bisque, glaze and enamel), working in a dust and a grease free environment,
and the know-how of painting. Over glaze enameled pots are not only
for practical use but are often works appreciated for their high-art
quality.
